Life and education

Dr. Ahmad Kaviani was born in Qazvin –a town near Tehran, the capital of Iran- in 1969 and completed his primary education there. He then pursued his medical studies at Tehran University of Medical Sciences until May 1994, when he obtained his medical doctorate from the same university. In September of that year, after successfully passing the comprehensive residency exam, he began his academic endeavors in the field of general surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. After four years, in September 2018, he achieved the sixth rank among over 150 participants in the National General Surgery Board Examinations.

In January 2001, through a rigorous selection process, his scientific and research contributions, including authoring scientific articles and books, earned him a position as a faculty member at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Since then, he has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Surgery at the university.

In November 2006, Dr. Kaviani started a fellowship in breast and cancer surgery at the prestigious centers, Curie and Gustave Roussy Institutes. He successfully completed this program in 2007. Additionally, in the same year, he gained admission to the Gustave Roussy Institute in Paris, where he acquired knowledge and expertise in the field of oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery. Finally, between 2006 and 2008, Dr. Kaviani obtained the AFSA certificate in cancer surgery and Inter-university diploma (DIU) in  Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery.

After returning from Parisin 2008, Dr. Kaviani's educational, research, and therapeutic contributions led to his promotion from an Assistant Professor to an Associate Professor of Surgery at the university.  In 2010, he established the first university sub-division of breast diseases within the Surgery Department of Imam Hospital, the greatest university hospital in Iran. In this sub-division, he performs various surgical interventions for the treatment of breast cancer, including different types of partial mastectomies, oncoplastic techniques, total mastectomies with various forms of breast reconstruction, contra-lateral symmetrization, and nipple-areola complex reconstructions, etc. Dr Kaviani founded "breast cancer surgery fellowship program" in the university by the help of his colleagues in 2015 where he was the program coordinator of this academic program in Tehran University till his movement to Canada in 2018.

Thanks to his extensive and impactful scientific activities, Dr. Kaviani's scientific rank was improved from Associate Professor to the prestigious "Full Professor" position in December 2013, following the audit committee's approval of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

In recent years, his research activities have made significant strides, as it is clear in the publication of over 125 research articles in esteemed international peer-reviewed journals as of the end of 2022.

One of most eminent academic activities of Dr. Kaviani's is the establishment of a medical journal called Archives of Breast Cancer ( in 2014. He successfully accomplished this great international scientific task through his dedication to research, personal efforts, personal financial support, and the assistance of renowned professors from prestigious universities in different countries such as the United States, Canada, France, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium, England, and Iran. Recently, the journal is celebrating its 10th year of publication as an international scientific journal. Archives of Breast Cancer has garnered recognition and indexing in prominent databases such as Scopus, Embase, EBSCO, Index Copernicus, and more. This signifies the journal's importance and widespread dissemination of its research.

In 2018, Dr. Kaviani moved to Canada after joining the University of Montreal as a fellow in surgical oncology. Since 2022, Dr. Kaviani has been actively engaged in his academic pursuits in the field of breast cancer surgery as an academic surgeon in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Montreal. However, he maintains regular scientific communication with academic colleagues and professors across different universities, ensuring continuous collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Adhering to medical ethics codes, Dr. Kaviani has prioritized the continuity of care for his previous patients. To ensure accessibility for his Persian-speaking patients, he established a virtual clinic for breast diseases called "Ruban" in 2020. The scientific advisory of Dr. Kaviani has been non-profited in launching this startup,
